Burnham Library volunteer recognised at ‘Somerset Stars’ awards

-

A Burnham-On-Sea Library volunteer is among helpers from across Somerset who have been recognised for their commitment at an awards ceremony.

The council invited members of the public to nominate volunteers deserving special recognition to be named as ‘Somerset Star Volunteers’ as part of National Volunteers Week and over 150 nominations were submitted.

Stephen Bench was recognised for volunteering his time at Burnham Library where he helps older people to develop IT skills.

He said: “I’m accepting this award not for myself, but for the ladies at Burnham Library, who are a lovely bunch. When I was completing my first Open University degree the Library was absolutely fantastic, they were exceptional and always have been, so this is something for them.”

Successful entries from each district of the county and a winning voluntary organisation were selected at random by Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Cllr William Wallace.

Cllr Wallace said: “Volunteers are unsung heroes that do so much without asking for anything in return and I would personally like to thank all volunteers in Somerset for their work and also Somerset You can Do for putting this together.”
