Hundreds of students from across Somerset have taken part in a Young Writers Competition hosted by King Alfred School in Highbridge.

Students from King Alfred, St Dunstans and Fairlands schools had great success in the competition.

The overall winners were Year 11 student Theo Wakeling of St Dunstans School, Glastonbury, and Year 8 student Tabitha Fuller, of Fairlands School in Cheddar.

Rowan Mobsby-Frost of King Alfred School won second place, with Jake Rodmell and Jodie Lynham, in fourth and fifth. Megan Andrews of St Dunstans School, finished runner up. Key Stage 3 winner was Tabitha Fuller of Fairlands School with Helena Steven and Abigail Campbell in second and third place.

Alison Wray, Somerset Subject Network Leader for English at King Alfred’s said: “There were over 300 entries this year. The judging process was extremely difficult due to the superb quality of writing the students of Somerset had produced.”

“Those shortlisted stood out with their creativity and flair. We have some very talented young writers in our county and it has been wonderful to give them the recognition they deserve.”

Guest Speaker Sue C Medcalf, of ‘An accidental Author’, said: “I was extremely impressed with the standard of the students and their writing. It was enjoyable to hear the variety of the stories and I was amazed that there were so many entries.”

“Not all children will aspire to being an author, but it is important for them to enjoy reading, writing and learning to make the best of their abilities in the future.”
