Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Brean Down on Saturday afternoon (April 8th) amid concerns that a group of people were putting themselves in difficulty to reach this goat on the cliffs.
The Brean beach warden raised the alarm after several young people were reported to have tried climbing up the cliffs to reach the animal.
A Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard spokesman said: “Once on scene we liaised with our operations room and it was decided after a quick investigation that no lives were in danger so we were instructed not to initiate a rescue.”
“In our previous experience, goats have appeared stuck for days but when approached run off.”
“With no risk to human life we were stood down. We don’t rescue animals including dogs, we only prevent human casualties, when necessary.”
“We appreciate this is an emotive subject but we can only intervene if there is risk to human life. If you have a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
It was handed over to the fire service on Saturday, who also decided that because no human life was at risk they would also not conduct a rescue.
The RSPCA and a cliff rescue team in Bristol have also been approached to help the goat, which the beach warden says has been stuck since Monday.
