Man arrested in Highbridge after calling fire crews to kitchen blaze

-

A Highbridge man who was wanted by police has been arrested after he called emergency services to tackle a kitchen blaze at his home on Thursday morning (December 10th).

Two fire engines from Burnham rushed to Market Street in Highbridge at 9.45am, as pictured here, after a faulty toaster set off a fire.

Two occupants of the property were able to safely leave the premises, although a lady required treatment from paramedics for smoke inhalation.

While investigating the incident, it became apparent that a male occupant of the property was wanted locally by police.

Police spokesman Steve Game told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Police were called to the scene by the fire brigade and a man aged 22 was arrested.”

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin added: “On arrival, our crews found smoke emerging from the premises and they entered the property with breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.”

“The occupant had managed to extinguish the fire with a dry powder extinguisher. Smoke detectors were fitted at the property, but did not activate.”

The incident caused delays to traffic in the centre of Highbridge, but Market Street was not fully closed at any point.
