Members of Burnham-On-Sea’s Harriers running club have taken part in an extra special training session after their latest run by joining a CPR and defibrillator training session at the town’s BAY Centre.
Debra, a nurse from Weston Hospital, gave the training to 11 runners with Dr Stuart Anderson assisting with a supply of extra CPR dummies and a defibrillator.
They learned that people who are unfortunate enough to suffer a heart attack stand an 80% better chance of survival without brain damage if they are given CPR or their heart is restarted within the first three minutes of the emergency taking place.
Last year, the Harriers, Park runners, Burnham & Highbridge Town Council and Sedgemoor District Council raised funds for a new defibrillator to be installed at Apex Park in Highbridge.
“It seemed a good idea to train members in the life saving skills of CPR and learn how to use the Defibrillator should and emergency occur,” says a Harriers spokesman.
The group also organize the popular Apex Parkrun event which takes place every Saturday at 9am. So far they have clocked up 95 runs with up to 300 runners taking part in this popular event, covering a distance of a 5km course on a very picturesque course.
