History group to launch new heritage trail in Burnham this Saturday

-

Capture Burnham, a heritage trail and online archive initiative by North Sedgemoor Local History Group, is to be launched on Saturday 23rd August with a day of activities.

The event will be held at Somerset Skills & Learning Centre in Princess Street and will include the launch of a new heritage trail map encouraging young and old to explore Burnham’s history.

Activities for all the family will be held from 11am until 3pm. Local residents and visitors are encouraged to bring along their memories and keepsakes of Burnham’s past to the event for capturing on film, audio and through stills photography.

Professional photographer Richard Tomlinson will be taking portraits of individuals and families and he hopes they will bring with them objects that symbolise their connection to Burnham.

Somerset Skills & Learning marketing manager and tutor Adrian Bowen will also be leading a drawing workshop using the Low Lighthouse as the subject whilst the team from Somerset Film will be leading an animation activity and helping people to get online to explore the website, upload their photos and leave memories.

As well as an exhibition of photographs and other documents there will also be screenings of a history film showing Burnham in the 1930s, filmed by resident Norman Gobey.

The project has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Burnham & Highbridge Town Council.

Co-ordinator John Strickland says that this will also be a day to thank all those who have been involved and to celebrate their efforts.

“So many people have given their time to this project; from those who helped in deciding the trail content and in obtaining the necessary permissions. Not forgetting those people who provided the images and information for the website and trail leaflet. Also to those people who have already recorded their memories for posterity,” he said.

Look out for the Town Crier as he launches the new trail and leads a circuit at 11.30am and 2.15pm.
