New ‘Friends of Marine Cove’ group to be formed in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A new group of volunteers is to be formed in February to look after Burnham’s vandalism-hit Marine Cove Gardens.

Sedgemoor District Council is holding a ‘Marine Cove Gardens Awareness Day’ on Thursday 19th February at the Princess Hall, from 3pm – 7pm, when the new ‘Friends of Marine Cove’ group will be formed.

Marina Dunstone, Sedgemoor’s Parks and Open Spaces Project Officer, has written to dozens of residents who expressed an interest in the gardens, pictured above, stating: “If you are passionate about our cultural and natural heritage and can offer a little of your time to share your ideas and in order to improve Marine Cove Gardens, we would like to meet you at our volunteer recruitment day for ‘Friends’ of Marine Cove.”

“There will be a Heritage Lottery Fund update and you can discover how you can get involved, share your enthusiasm and learn new skills.”

“Staff and volunteers will be on hand to talk to you about the volunteer opportunities available at Marine Cove.”

In recent times, the shelters at the gardens on The Esplanade have fallen into disrepair due to vandalism and are currently boarded up to prevent further deterioration.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last year how a petition had been launched by Sedgemoor District Council last summer to gather support for the £670,000 scheme to renovate the gardens, however just 107 people signed up in support of the gardens.

In March 2008, the disrtrict council made a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Parks For People’ programme. The bid covers bringing back lost features such as a sundial, water fountain and seating, plus restoring the shelters and more.
