Burnham-On-Sea residents celebrate victory in beachfront flats campaign

-

A group of campaigning Burnham-On-Sea residents who successfully fought plans by a property developer to turn a seafront home into a block of apartments held a celebration to mark the decision on Sunday (January 18th).

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last November that residents of Allandale Road had won their bid to get the controversial application thrown out by the Planning Inspectorate.

They were up in arms over plans to build a three-storey block of 14 apartments in place of a house on Burnham’s beachfront, and argued that it would have changed the appearance of the town forever by encouraging other similar applications.

Residents gathered together on Sunday to mark the success, and were told by campaign Chairman David Jenkins: “This is a great occasion when, for once, common sense shone out.”

John Palmer was praised for “the huge amount of work” he did on forming the residents’ case, along with Cllr Neville Jones and Tom Ashton.

Tom Ashton, who was one of the leading campaigners fighting the plans, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Sunday: “This campaign was a great success and pulled us closer together as a community.”

He also thanked Burnham-On-Sea.com for “publicising the case and spreading the word about the application.”
