One Burnham fire engine was called to a home in Highbridge Road, Burnham at 4.19am.
The man, in his early 40s, had got his hand and arm stuck in a letter box while trying to retrieve a key on the other side of the door.
“We used small tools, saws, screwdrivers and washing-up liquid to release his hand while trying not to damage the door,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“He had been stuck there for around two hours before he’d been able to raise the alarm and get help. Fortunately, he was not injured – just his pride was a little bruised. It was certainly one of our more unusual incidents!”
