Burnham-On-Sea police launch new crackdown on speeding motorists

-

Police in Burnham-On-Sea are this week stepping up their efforts to rid the town of speeding motorists with the launch of a fresh crackdown on drivers that ignore speed limits.

More speed checks are being introduced at known trouble spots, including The Esplanade (pictured above) and Marine Drive, where motorists are being pulled over and issued with fixed penalty notices.

Over 60 fixed penalty notices have been served on speeding motorists along Marine Drive in just the past six months alone, police said this week.

Speeding was also named as the biggest concern of residents at the police’s quarterly PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings, in Burnham and surrounding villages in recent weeks.

In Burnham, speeding along The Esplanade, Marine Drive, Berrow Road and Ash Tree Road are to be focus of officers.

Town centre Sergeant Ian Kennett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Highways Agency is currently carrying out speed checks at Ash Tree Road and we are looking for Speedwatch volunteers at Berrow Road.”

“Community Speedwatch is a fantastic way to empower local residents to tackle an issue that is affecting them and their neighbours. However, you can also expect to see local officers patrolling these areas at peak times, issuing warnings and fixed penalty notices to anyone driving above the speed limit. In the past six months we have issued over 60 fixed penalty notices for speeding along Marine Drive alone.”

Rural Sergeant Steve Lawrence added: “Officers have been carrying out speed checks in many of the villages surrounding Burnham, issuing fixed penalty notices.”

“We are also working closely with Sedgemoor Highways Agency to address the parking issues that were raised – particularly outside Berrow and Lympsham Schools.”
