Burnham anglers set to tackle EDF over loss of fishing grounds

-

Power firm EDF is to meet concerned anglers and boat owners from Burnham-On-Sea during a special meeting tonight (Thursday) to discuss their concerns about lost fishing grounds caused by the planned expansion of Hinkley Point.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in December that work to expand the nuclear power station could result in the loss of huge swathes of fishing waters around Bridgwater Bay.

Concerns have also been raised regarding expected sea temperature increases and the introduction of new water in-take and out-take areas offshore. Fears about effluent discharges have previously been raised as well.

Pete Nicholson, Chairman of Burnham Water Users Forum, which represents local anglers and boat users, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “EDF has said there will be no recreational use of the sea in a large area around the proposed new jetty at Hinkley during the construction work, which will last several years.”

“This means our sea fishing area around Burnham will be reduced by around one eighth of its current size.”

“Many local fishermen frequently fish in the waters around the power station and we don’t feel that our views are being listened to or fully taken into consideration.”

The meeting with EDF representatives will be held at 8pm at the Oaktree Arena this Thursday and is open to all boat and shore anglers.
