New proposals to introduce speed bumps along roads through a residential area of Highbridge were given a ‘thumbs up’ by town councillors last night (Wednesday, February 15th).
In an effort to tackle the problem of speeding motorists along Worston Road and Donstan Road, Somerset County Council has proposed a series of traffic calming measures.
Eight sets of speed bumps and tarmac tables look set to be introduced in an effort to cut speeds amid concerns from some residents.
The project, which is understood to cost over £10,000, will be funded entirely with ‘community funding’ from the developers of the nearby Mulholland Park.
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton said at Wednesday’s meeting: “I welcome this developer-funded scheme if it helps to make our roads safer, providing that residents living near the bumps don’t find they are too noisy.”
The town council’s Planning Applications Committee gave its approval to the scheme and final discussions are likely in the next two weeks.
The news was welcomed by Kim Chatwin, Chairman of Highbridge Residents Association, who told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We very much welcome safety improvements like this in Highbridge that cut the danger of speeding motorists.”
One local resident, John Hart, from Worston Road, recently collected over 50 signatures on a petition calling on police to crackdown on boy racers using the road.
Town councillor Helen Groves said while she welcomed the road safety improvements, she thinks many residents in the area are concerned about the poor condition of their roads.
“The crumbling road surface in parts of Worston Road also urgently needs to be addressed by the county council,” she told Wednesday’s meeting.
