Sedgemoor District Council has temporarily halted legal proceedings against the owner of Burnham-On-Sea pier in a bid to resolve a legal dispute over whether a shop on her forecourt should be demolished.
Over 100 people have signed a petition supporting the Pavilion’s Manager, Louise Parkin, in her battle with the district council.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last month that the council had served the UK’s shortest pier with an Enforcement Notice, requesting that a white conservatory, which is used as a sweet shop, be demolished because it was installed without permission and is ‘out of keeping’.
Louise wrote to Sedgemoor District Council Chief Executive Kerry Rickards, asking him to step in and resolve the matter.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Mr Rickards has replied to me to say the council has halted its legal proceedings while it investigates the matter further.”
“I am very pleased by this and hope the council steps back and looks at the whole situation.”
Louise is adamant that she does not require planning permission because the building is a ‘Permitted Development’ under planning regulations relating to amusement parks and she adds that the building is not of out keeping with nearby properties.
She added: “I have had lots of people sign my petition – over 100 so far – to give their support. The vast majority can see we are just trying to run a business and want to keep the Pavilion running.”
