More large jellyfish get washed up in Burnham-On-Sea and Brean

-

Beach users in Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Brean have been warned to watch out for jellyfish this week after more of the creatures have been washed up along our tide lines.

Seven Moon and Barrel Jellyfish, which can deliver a mild sting to paddlers and swimmers, were washed up at Brean over the weekend and the large jellyfish pictured above was also washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach.

Beach walker Keith Nichols contacted Burnham-On-Sea.com on Sunday, saying: “There was a large jellyfish on the beach today about two feet across not far from lighthouse.”

A 14-inch wide Moon jellyfish was washed up at Brean, as pictured below, which was one of several large jellyfish on local beaches during the past fortnight.

“They can give a nasty sting so we are advising people using the sea to keep an eye out for them at the moment,” said the beach warden.

Last month we reported here on a series of jellyfish being washed up along the beach between Burnham-On-Sea and Brean.

A spokesman for the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “While some jellyfish are harmless or have a very mild sting, others have a more painful sting. We recommend that, for your own safety, you do not touch them and watch out for them if using the sea where they have been seen.”
