Burnham-On-Sea charity worker shortlisted for Pride Of Britain Award

-

A woman from Burnham-On-Sea who has dedicated more than thirty years of her life to raising money for schools in Kenya was this week shortlisted for a Pride of Britain Award.

Sue Stevens spends all of the summer months selling bric a brack and second hand clothes on a driveway in Berrow Road and every penny goes towards helping children get into education.

Sue set up a charity, called Educate The Kids, 30 years ago and has been travelling to Kenya two or three times a year ever since, helping children get into school.

Berrow resident June Hill, who helps the charity, said: “Every opportunity Sue gets she is selling and raising money. She often gets up at 5am in the morning to wash the donated clothes and sort them out. It is her life and you can’t help but admire her.”

Sue says: “I choose to do it because I think I can relate to poverty. From a problem child knowing what it is like to go without food and to never have anything new – only always pass-you-downs.”

Sue has raised £4,000 since July this year with her sales and many more thousands overt the years, which has helped many children in Kenya to get a better education.

Sue’s work was featured on ITV Westcountry News this week, which has been highlighting the region’s shortlisted candidates.
