Burnham-On-Sea beach water quality data now available online

-

Visitors to Burnham-On-Sea beach can check up on real-time information about bathing water quality using a Wessex Water website.

The firm is offering the free advice for surfers and beach lovers via its online Coastwatch service.

Hosted on the Wessex Water website, Coastwatch allows people to access real-time information about bathing water quality and also learn whether any combined sewer overflows (CSOs) have been in use.

Wessex Water spokesman Peter Orchard says that CSOs operate occasionally during periods of intense rainfall when sewers are at full capacity, preventing heavily-diluted foul water from flooding roads, properties and open spaces.

“Coastwatch provides information for all 348 miles of coastline in our region and is used by thousands every year,” he added.

“Our beaches are among the cleanest in the country thanks to improving sewage treatment processes and upgraded infrastructure, ensuring that water quality continues to meet the expectations of customers and holiday makers.”

The same data is also shared with the Environment Agency, local councils and the charity Surfers Against Sewage.

The Coastwatch website can be accessed here.
