Burnham-On-Sea’s farmers markets should be moved out of the town’s High Street in order to reduce disruption on shops and motorists, a town councillor has called this week.
Proposals have been put forward by Cllr Neville Jones for the monthly markets to be moved into Adam Street instead.
“Traders in the High Street tell me they’re losing money because of these disruptive markets and I think it’s time we take a fresh look at their location,” he said.
“Closing the High Street on 12 days a year – on the last Friday of each month for five hours – causes a lot of disruption. I want to keep farmers markets in Burnham, but they should not be hurting trade.”
“I’m suggesting the markets move into Adam Street with just a few stalls in the High Street instead.”
The proposals were debated at this week’s Town Projects Committee meeting and will be discussed further.
Cllr Michael Clarke told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There are varying opinions on this, so we intend to invite the organiser of the markets along to our next meeting to consider the proposals further before any decision is taken.”
