MP launches Somerset Art Weeks festival in Burnham-On-Sea

Dozens of yellow signs like this one have popped up on street corners around Burnham-On-Sea and the surrounding area to promote local artists showcasing their work during the 2014 Somerset Art Weeks festival.

Hundreds of paintings, ceramics, drawings, textiles and sculptures are among the items on show in homes and studios across Burnham between Saturday September 20th and October 5th during the celebration of work by over 400 artists across the county.

Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt visited town artist Judith Champion, pictured above , on Friday evening (September 19th) to help launch the festival locally.

Judith is displaying her expressive drawings and paintings at Middle Burnham Farm in Stoddens Lane, Burnham which are inspired by looking at shapes in the surroundings here in Somerset.

Debbie Nuttall, Andrea Coleman and Juliet Farnese (right) are showing a colourful display of paintings, drawings, sculptures, fashion and stonecarvings at Huntspill Court, 37 Main Road in West Huntspill.

Artistry in wood is the subject of George Fowraker’s display at 7 Rectory Drive in Burnham.

Burnham’s Peter Howe is showing his contemporary paintings in oils and acrylics portraying landscapes, seascapes and people at Meadow View, 16 Osborne Walk.

Eric Petrie, a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition, is showing his paintings of animals and birds at 100 Highbridge Road in Burnham.

Linda Gee has taken inspiration from her garden to create vibrant textiles, which are on show at her Garden Studio at 212 Burnham Road.

Burnham’s Cora Stock and Margaret Micklewright are displaying their exciting work at 47 The Esplanade on Burnham seafront.

Tim Smith is displaying paintings and drawings of local scenes at 47 Rosewood Avenue, which include the town’s lighthouse, right.

Other local artists include Sheila Holmes at Rose Cottage, 8 Brent Street in Brent Knoll who is showcasing jewellery, silverwork and pottery.

A spokesman for Somerset Arts Weeks said: “Scores of studios are open across Somerset, giving visitors a chance to see the heart of Somerset’s creativity. There is a huge variety of work to see and an equal variety of people and places to visit – it’s a chance to explore.”
