Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward after two people died in a serious car crash in Berrow, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Sunday (February 26th).
These were the scenes in Berrow on Sunday morning after a black BMW M3 careered off Coast Road in thick fog at 4.45am near the entrance to Sandy Glade holiday park. The car came to rest in a hedgerow.
Fire, police and ambulance crews from Burnham rushed to the scene but nothing could be done to save two men – aged 37 and 25 – who were trapped inside the wreckage.
Police would now like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision or anyone who saw the car prior to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the roads policing unit on 101.
Inspector Dave Horwood of Avon and Somerset Constabulary told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I can confirm that two men, both believed to be from the West Midlands, died.”
“The cause of the incident is not known at this stage, but there was thick fog in the area at the time and it is not known whether this was a contributory factor.”
He confirmed that no-one else had been in the vehicle at the time of the single vehicle accident.
Police have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward by contacting their non-emergency number, 101. Click here for video footage.
Coast Road was closed for over six hours on Sunday morning to allow police to begin their investigation into what happened and enable the recovery of the vehicle. Traffic was diverted along Berrow’s Red Road.
The incident comes less than a fortnight after an earlier crash on Coast Road, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here. The latest incident is certain to add more pressure on Somerset County Council to introduce new safety measures along the road following a long-running campaign.
