A unique event was held in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday evening (September 20th) to celebrate a summer-long arts project.

The ‘Keep the Change Celebration’ was organised by local arts charity Take Art at The Princess Theatre, attended by dozens of local people.

The event was held to unveil the results of Burnham’s Small Change Challenge, and there were plenty of inspiring projects on show.

Back in June, residents were invited to become ‘change makers’ and over 70 people took up the challenge and received £10 in order to make small, but significant community changes in Burnham and Highbridge.

“Saturday’s event provided a great chance to hear what happened over the summer featuring a whole range of activities in Burnham and Highbridge where people used their £10 challenge fund,” said organiser Sarah Peterkin.

They included the launch of a dog fouling prevention scheme in Burnham and Highbridge by members of the Youth Town Council, a project to gather positive descriptions about Burnham, a seagull art project plus short plays, poems, art displays and much more.

A further project is the launch of a postcard showing the latest yarn bombing on the seafront to raise money for a new charity in memory of teenager Charley Marks, featured here.

Sarah added that 260 people had attended a series of workshops in the towns over the summer featuring writing poems, stories, plays; acting and drama; beach-writing; graffiti; song-writing; digital & social media, and public speaking.

The successful scheme was supported and funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales, Literature Works, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and the Big Lottery Fund.
