Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront fireworks display will this year go ahead on the evening before this year’s winter carnival as normal – despite clashing with Remembrance Sunday.
At a meeting on Wednesday (February 29th), town councillors considered whether to hold the display on the traditional night before the Burnham and Highbridge Carnival, risking causing offence, or to move it to another date.
However, Town Clerk Eileen Shaw said: “Burnham’s fireworks display has clashed with Remembrance Sunday once before – in 2008 – and on that occasion the fireworks company gave part of the display a remembrance theme with suitable music and poppy-coloured fireworks. We will see if they can do a similar display this year.”
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of holding the display on Sunday November 11th at a time to be decided later this year.
The council has set aside a budget to partially finance the display, although it will be seeking sponsors later in the year. The spectacular event always attracts thousands of spectators to Burnham seafront.
