Dozens of the UK’s leading sand yachting enthusiasts were in action on Brean beach on Saturday, competing in the British Land Yachting Championships, but Sunday’s racing was halted by wet weather.
Over 30 pilots from across the country took part in Saturday’s third round of the British Land Yachting Championships, in glorious sunny conditions.
However, Sunday morning’s early heavy rain left pools of surface water on the beach, raising the risk that the yachts would aquaplane so racing was cancelled.
Organiser Martyn Hayle from Brean Land Yacht Club told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Saturday’s 13 races went ahead in ideal conditions. It was as good as Brean gets with strong winds, sun, and a smooth beach.”
“But it was a completely different story this morning, with heavy rain leaving dangerous conditions and unfortunately racing had to be cancelled.”
Saturday’s classes were won by Tim Spears, Ed Inglish, Rhys Davies and Graham Deal.
The event also saw the first mini land yachting races take place and also featured the trial of a new Seagull Silence yacht to encourage youngsters into the sport.
The next event will be held at Brean in March 2013, although Brean Land Yacht Club holds training sessions during the year and newcomers are welcome.
