Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has been given a new role at the heart of government this week.
Tessa Munt has been appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable.
A Parliamentary Private Secretary is a role given to a member of parliament by a senior minister in government or shadow minister to act as their contact for the House of Commons.
The role of a PPS is widely seen as a starting point for MPs who are looking to become ministers themselves.
This new role means that Tessa has relinquished her position as a Whip, a post she has held since shortly after her election as an MP. She has also resigned her place on the Education Select Committee, to which she was elected, to ensure her busy schedule of commitments in Somerset is not affected.
Tessa told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is an exciting new role for me in a Department with a wide-ranging brief covering matters as diverse as business competition, science and research, employment law, apprenticeships and further education, all important to the future of the country. This will also offer the opportunity to gain invaluable experience which I can use to help businesses in my local area.”
“I am looking forward to working with Vince and his excellent team of Ministers wherever I can.”
Tessa’s move comes after the appointment of Jo Swinson as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg.
