Exclusive: Burnham-On-Sea carpet firm shuts with loss of 10 jobs

-

A carpets and flooring business based in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea has this week closed with the loss of several jobs.

Stephen Woods Floor Contractors shut its shop at 17 Victoria Street, pictured, due to the downturn in the housing market.

A sign in the window of the shop states that “due to unforseen circumstances, Stephen Woods Flooring has ceased trading.”

Mr Woods explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There are a number of reasons behind the closure, but it’s mainly due to the downturn in the number of new housing builds.”

“This has hurt business a great deal. We’ve also had no help at all from our bank, which has been very disappointing, and have been left with no choice but to close.”

He added: “Ten jobs have regrettably been lost over the past year, with five people just recently laid off with the shop closure.”

Mr Woods added that he has linked up with Highbridge-based C&H Carpets and Flooring to ensure that the firm’s major customers are not left without a supplier of flooring materials.
