Children from Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s School children will be hosting a coffee morning at St Andrew’s Church in the town on Wednesday (March 21st).
Ten children will be making and serving coffee to visitors to promote the idea of ‘Fairtrade’, which they have been studying as part of their lessons on global education. There will also be a quiz organised by the youngsters, plus an exhibition for visitors to look at.
Fairtrade promotes fairness in trading between the first and third world and allows third world farmers to keep a larger percentage of the price of their goods rather than it becoming a supermarket profit.
Vicar Graham Witts said: “I am so pleased to welcome the children to organise this event – we need to educate people of all ages as to the true cost of our food.”
“I like Fairtrade chocolate and so try to do my bit for supporting third world farmers in this way. If we all purchased one Fairtrade product a week it would transform the lives of so many third world farmers who want a living wage – not charity. Having seen poverty in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, I know what I am talking about.”
The event will be held on Wednesday March 21st from 10am-11am when all visitors will be welcome to come along and support the children.
