Jungle fever at Burnham’s Hillview Carnival Club as cart takes shape

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club is a hive of activity this week as its team works around the clock to get their new cart, called Jungle Fever, finished in time for the start of the carnival season.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was invited to take a look behind the scenes as the club – which is celebrating its 40th year – completes the jungle-themed cart.

Decorated with more than 5,000 light bulbs, the 80ft-long cart has cost the club more than £10,000 to build.

Hillview’s Treasurer, Lyn Burland, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Everything is on track – we have a small, but dedicated team of volunteers who are pulling together to get our entry finished on time.”

“It’s been a tough year for us after struggling to find somewhere to build the cart after the loss of Woodberrys, our pevious home. It did look at one point as though we wouldn’t be out this year.”

“But then Terry Rickards at Burnham Waste came forward to offer us an area to build the entry and the building work has quickly moved forward.”

“We have an 80ft three-piece entry – a tractor, cart and generator – which is the same size as last year. We are so happy to be getting out in the club’s 40th year.”

It will be seen by thousands of people at carnivals across Somerset, starting in Bridgwater on Saturday (November 1st) and then Burnham on Monday (November 3rd).

Lyn added: “We’re hugely grateful for the support of Terry Rickards at Burnham Waste and to the Lighthouse Inn for their support in becoming our new HQ.”

Hillview’s team of volunteers are working all hours screwing in light bulbs and decorating the final sections of the cart as the entry takes shape.
