A major beach clean-up will be held in Burnham-On-Sea this weekend as part of a nationwide initiative to rid the UK’s beaches of litter.
The Big Spring Beach Clean will be held this Saturday (March 24th) from 11am on Burnham beach, and is being co-ordinated across the country by environmental charity ‘Surfers Against Sewage’.
Volunteers from the Somerset Rural Youth Project are overseeing the Burnham beach clean and are keen for local residents to join them.
Organiser John Addicott told Burnham-On-Sea.com the group will meet next to Burnham jetty from 11am, with the clean-up itself getting underway at 12 noon.
“Local residents are very welcome to join us – all you need is strong gloves, stout shoes and waterproof clothing,” he said.
“A number of young people from Highbridge’s King Alfred School will be joining us and we hope others will come on the day.”
The annual Surfers Against Sewage Big Spring Beach Clean has been removing marine litter from UK beaches for many years with the help of community volunteers.
Surfers Against Sewage – which is an an environmental charity seeking to protect the UK’s oceans, waves and beaches for all to enjoy safely – says the amount of marine litter found on UK beaches has almost doubled in the last fifteen years, with a shocking 1,969 litter items found on every kilometre of coastline, according to a recent survey.
