Highbridge school awards sports bursaries to ‘outstanding’ students

-

Highbridge’s King Alfred School has awarded Sports Bursaries to four of their most outstanding sixth form students.

The bursary of £250 is awarded annually to all sixth form students who compete at county, national or international level – and is intended to be used towards the cost of coaching, equipment and travel.

The students are Sophie McArdle, who is South-West Pairs champion and South-West Trio runner up in Sports Acrobatics; and Charlotte Humphries, who is Somerset Girls Golf captain and Burnham and Berrow Ladies Championship runner up.

The other two pupils are tennis player Rhiannon Parsons, who is Somerset Ladies champion and Burnham Open Ladies champion; and horse rider Chloe Dixon who is South-West Area Pony Club champion and was seventh in the British Championships.

Headteacher Andy Owen told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are keen to promote sport at all tiers, from grass roots level through to elite participation. We have a fantastic range of sports and activities for all of our students on offer at school.”

“However, the bursaries are recognition of the tremendous hard work, commitment and dedication shown by our students who have to go the ‘extra mile’ to perform at an elite level.”

He went onto say that the school hopes that this additional funding will encourage students who stay on to study in the sixth form to compete at the highest possible level.
