Plans for four new homes at Burnham care home prompt safety fears

-

Plans to build four new homes on land next to a Burnham-On-Sea nursing home were given a ‘thumbs down’ by councillors last night (Wednesday) amid safety concerns.

Land to the south of Burnham Nursing Home in Oxford Street, pictured, has been earmarked for the development of four new homes by the owners, County Court Care.

The bid for outline planning permission was considered by Burnham and Highbridge town councillors at their Planning Applications Committee on Wednesday evening (June 21st).

Cllr Martin Cox said: “Adding more traffic here would leave me worried about safety – the entrance to the nursing home is next to a busy road junction and a pedestrian crossing.”

Cllr Nick Tolley added: “The entrance is very close to the pedestrian crossing which is used by children getting to the nearby St Joseph’s School through the week – it’s ridicuous to create more traffic at this entrance.”

“Also, if there’s not enough car parking spaces for the care home visitors because of the new homes, where will they park? More pressure will be put on parking in adjacent streets.”

The care home owners plan to widen the entrance onto Oxford Street by demolishing part of the boundary wall to make access easier and safer.

Town councillors voted against the plans, lodging an objection, however the final decision rests with Sedgemoor District Council.
