440 residents air concerns about future of fire-hit Highbridge Hotel

-

Hundreds of residents have taken part in a survey to air their concern about potential plans for a new housing development on the site of the fire-hit Highbridge Hotel.

Over the past few days, 440 residents have taken part in the survey, organised by town councillor Helen Groves (pictured).

It comes as owner Mead Realisations considers what to do with the remains of the building plus the former cattle market site next door. The firm has said it could consider building houses.

Cllr Groves told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “The overwhelming response of the survey has favoured a development of this site which combines family homes – not flats – and commercial and retail usage which enhances the existing retail area of Highbridge.”

“It is very clear residents are concerned about the impact upon infrastructure within the area of this and other proposed developments and I sincerely hope that Sedgemoor’s Development Control Committee will give this data the consideration it deserves.”

She added: “The response both on doorsteps and online has been brilliant – currently 441 people have taken part.”

“I am also grateful to all who have taken part, including those from Burnham and other outlying areas as this enables us to demonstrate that concern exists over a wider area – something which has been given little consideration to date.”

“It is my hope that now we are able to provide evidence to SDC they will re-assess the approach that has been taken so far and will be more willing to engage with residents in their decision-making processes.”

“It is clear that whilst people are divided over whether the hotel should be restored or demolished, there is a real sense of dissatisfaction with the manner in which the issue has been handled.”

Cllr Groves intends to hold a public meeting within the next few weeks if none is forthcoming from Sedgemoor District council to provide an opportunity for members of the public to air their concerns and she also hopes to establish a community focus group to positively address the challenges Highbridge is facing.
