Police issue appeal after ‘deliberate’ fire on Burnham-On-Sea seafront

-

Police have appealed for witnesses following a “deliberate” fire on Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront this week that was close to spreading to a cafe building.

A Burnham fire crew was called to the Bay View Cafe on the South Esplanade at 1am on Friday (June 23rd) where a large wheelie bin full of rubbish had been set alight.

Night staff at the nearby Showboat Amusements on The Esplanade, formerly called Sunspot Amusements, called 999 for the fire service after spotting the blaze right next to the cafe building.

A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One of the blue wheelie bins was alight against the wall of the cafe when we arrived.”

“It was fortunate not to have gone through the eaves and into the roof. If the wind had been blowing in a different direction it would have had a different outcome possibly.”

The fire service says the cause was “deliberate” and anyone with information should contact Burnham-On-Sea Police by calling 101.
