Burnham-On-Sea’s Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Tessa Munt has this week backed a campaign group’s fight to stop controversial plans for a new roundabout at a road junction in Highbridge.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this week how a new group – Residents Against Proposed Yellow Disaster (RAPYD) – had been formed to campaign against the County Council’s plans to build a new mini-roundabout, plus a pedestrian crossing and yellow lines at the junction of Pepperall Road and Burnham Road.
The council says it is needed because the soon-to-open Frank Foley Parkway will create a huge increase in traffic passing through the area.
However, Tessa Munt visited members of RAPYD on Wednesday (April 22nd), as pictured, and heard about residents’ concerns regarding the scheme.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Residents are understandably very concerned about what will happen if new double yellow lines are introduced along Pepperall Road and Burnham Road. They believe it will encourage traffic to go much faster and make the junction more danagerous to pedestrians and other drivers.”
“The positioning of bus stops also does not seem to have been fully taken into consideration, which is very dangerous, and the owners of four houses at the junction will find it very difficult to drive out of their properties if the plans go ahead.”
“I understand that some new traffic controls are needed at the junction, but it would have been more sensible if the county council had spoken to residents and local police before going this far.”
A total of 23 local residents have already signed up to join RAPYD.
