Highbridge’s town clock is set to be demolished over the next few days to make way for a brand new one.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw confirmed this week that work to demolish the three-faced structure in the town’s Jubilee Gardens is to begin shortly to allow a new £20,000 four-faced clock to be installed.
“Western Power are disconnecting the existing power supply this week and scaffolding has gone up around the clock to allow the workmen to take it down safely,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The familiar Christmas star illumination which is attached to the clock’s concrete pillar will be taken away by Highbridge Chamber of Trade for re-use elsewhere.”
“Our new clock will be installed soon after Easter, along with a new electricity supply. The clock’s official unveiling will follow soon afterwards.”
The new clock is being introduced to replace the existing crumbling structure. Donations and pledges amounting to £16,700 have been received from around 30 residents and businesses, including one single donation of £5,000.
The Town Council will be putting the names of all those who donated cash into a hat and drawing a name who will be invited to officially open the landmark. Those who have given donations will also be acknowledged on a plaque to be sited at Highbridge Community Hall in Market Street.
