New Burnham-On-Sea Men’s Shed group to hold formal opening

-

A formal opening of Burnham-On-Sea’s new ‘Men’s Shed’ group is to be held on Tuesday (July 4th).

The group brings together a group of ‘shedders’ who share tools and resources to undertake practical, hands-on projects in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Tuesday’s launch, which is open to all men, will be held at 3pm at Morland Hall in Pearce Drive, off Morland Road, Highbridge.

Tony Cradock, Chairman of the group, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are calling it ‘independent men’s day’ and formally opening the group with a visit by the Deputy Mayor and local council representatives who have supported us.”

“One of the reasons for the launch of the group is that there are many reports of loneliness among men. They don’t socialise as much as should do and that can lead to all manner of problems.”

“It’s been found that they will socialise if they have an objective, which is where the Men’s Sheds comes in – we provide the facilities to come together. We don’t tell them what to do – they can just come along for a chat and a cuppa if necessary.”

“At Tuesday’s opening there will be a short talk about the aims and background of the group and then the Deputy Mayor will open it before we will welcome all the members – we hope to have up to 60 people there.”

The group has chosen Morland Hall as its base and work is being completed to adapt the facilities for its needs

“We are using part of the annexed section and have a large workbench in place to work around, with several electric tools, extra lighting and magnifying glasses,” said Tony. “We hope to add a Portakabin in the coming months to further develop the facilities.”

The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8.45am-11.45am and 1.45pm-4.45pm, timed to coincide with the connecting nearby bus service, and men are welcome to call in for as many or as few sessions as they want.

He thanked Burnham’s Tesco store for backing the group, adding that they have given refreshments for the opening day.
