A formal opening for Burnham-On-Sea’s new ‘Men’s Sheds’ group was held on Tuesday (July 4th).

The unique group brings together a group of ‘shedders’ who share tools and resources to undertake practical, hands-on projects in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Burnham and Highbridge’s Deputy Mayor Peter Burridge-Clayton led the event at the group’s base, Morland Hall in Pearce Drive, Highbridge, alongside members of the group and supporting organisations.

Tony Cradock, Chairman of the group, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “One of the reasons we have launched the group is that there are many reports of loneliness among men. They don’t socialise as much as they should do which can lead to all manner of problems.”

“It’s been found that they will socialise if they have an objective, which is where the Men’s Sheds comes in – we provide the facilities to bring them together. We don’t tell them what to do – they can just come along for a chat and a cuppa if necessary.”

“At Tuesday’s opening there was a short talk about the aims and background of the group and then the Deputy Mayor unveiled a plaque to mark the opening.”

The group has chosen Morland Hall as its base and work is being completed to adapt the facilities for its needs.

“We are using part of the annexed section and have a large workbench in place to work around, with several electric tools, extra lighting and magnifying glasses,” said Tony. “We hope to add a Portakabin in the coming months to further develop the facilities.”

The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8.45am-11.45am and 1.45pm-4.45pm, timed to coincide with the connecting nearby bus service, and men are welcome to call in for as many or as few sessions as they want.

Burnham’s Tesco store was thanked for its backing of the group, adding that they gave refreshments during the opening day.

Richard Mathews of Sedgemoor Community Partnership which runs the community hall said: “We welcome this organisation into our community programe and congratulate the dedication of this band of volunteer shedders in overcoming many obstacles in their endeavour to se up this worthy group.”
