The future of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s annual carnival appears to be safe again after dozens of new volunteers came forward on Wednesday (April 11th) following a desperate appeal for helpers.
More than 50 people attended the AGM of the Carnival Association at Burnham’s Ritz Social Club, as pictured here, following a warning from organisers that the event was in jeopardy due to a ‘volunteer crisis’.
Thousands of attention-grabbing leaflets were distributed across the area, as first reported here, warning residents that without more support the carnival “would close down”.
Carnival President Malcolm Borland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is very encouraging that we had such a good turnout this evening. The new volunteers will be a huge help for us in running this year’s carnival.”
He explained at the meeting that a “high number of new requirements have been placed on the carnival this year by a number of authorities surrounding health and safety, contingency plans, insurance and other matters.”
Carnival Chairman Phil New added: “We are very pleased with the turnout and would ask further residents interested in helping us to get in touch.”
