Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront information centre received almost 76,000 visitors during its first year under new management, it was revealed on Saturday (April 14th) as its volunteers celebrated the centre’s first anniversary.
Community group BIARS (Burnham Information and Rescue Support) took over the centre a year ago from Sedgemoor District Council, saving it from closure.
Since then, dozens of volunteers have come forward to help run the centre – which helped 75,985 visitors during the past 12 months.
Volunteers from BIARS celebrated the anniversary on Saturday afternoon with a special open day and a cake-cutting ceremony, as pictured here.
“A big thank you goes to all our volunteers and supporters who have helped to make BIARS such a success in its first year,” a BIARS spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We intend to build further on this solid start during our second year.”
BIARS took over the facilities from Sedgemoor District Council in April 2011. Its team of volunteers hand out tourist and community information while also providing sea safety advice and selling merchandise for BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat) and Burnham’s branch of the Coastguard Association.
New volunteers are welcome to join the centre’s friendly team by calling in at the centre or visiting the group online here.
