Burnham-On-Sea Carnival group tells of "financial struggles"

-

Organisers of Burnham-On-Sea’s winter carnival have this week spoken of the group’s “financial struggles” as the costs of holding the popular event continue to rise, while donations fall during the recession.

Carnival President Malcolm Borland made the comments during the Carnival Association’s annual general meeting, which was held in Burnham’s Ritz Club on Wednesday evening (May 13th).

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our street collections at last year’s carnival were down while our expenses have continued to increase. It is a struggle, and our finances continue to be an ongoing challenge, but we are holding our own.”

The group is planning to hold several fundraising events with the help of Burnham Lions Club over the summer months to bolster its coffers.

The Carnival Association has also appealed for more street collectors to come forward to help at November’s event.

Volunteers are being asked to contact Andrew Bryant at Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club on 07969 142645.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Carnival Association’s members re-elected Malcolm Borland as President and Chairman for 2009-10, while Phil New is Vice Chairman, Jan Paul is Hon Secretary and John Hodgson is Treasurer.
