Concern for beach swimmers sparks call-out for marine rescue crews

-

A walker’s concern for two people in the sea at Brean on Sunday evening (May 31st) sparked an emergency call-out for Burnham-On-Sea’s marine rescue teams.

Coastguards, a lifeboat, and a hovercraft were called to Brean at 8.50pm after the pair were seen almost half a mile out from the shore.

Burnham Coastguard Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A lady on the beach had concerns for two people a long way from shore in the sea.”

“She contacted the Coastguard and on our arrival, we found two Polish holidaymakers leaving the sea after a swim.”

“They were both safe and well, but I would stress that the beach walker did the right thing in alerting the Coastguard on any suspicion that they were in difficulty.”

BARB’s Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft was driven to Brean beach and Burnham’s Puffin lifeboat was launched as a precaution.
