Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club clinches County Cup win

-

Celebrations are underway at Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club after the club won the County Cup by clinching first place in their class at Saturday’s Glastonbury Carnival.

The club, which is celebrating its 40th year, also won a first place at Friday night’s Wells Carnival – following wins in Burnham, North Petherton and Shepton, and second-place spots in Bridgwater and Weston.

The club has won more points from the judges at each of the carnivals than the nearst club, meaning it is the overall county champion.

Hillview’s colourful jungle-themed entry, called Jungle Fever, has received praise from spectators and judges across Somerset over the past two weeks.

Hillview’s treasurer, Lyn Burland, told Burnham-On-Sea.com the club has enjoyed a “great season” and is “absolutely delighted” to have won.

The club has had a challenging year after losing its base at Woodberry Brothers in Highbridge whne it went bust, leaving the club homeless with nowhere to build.

However, its team of volunteers rallied behind the club and still managed to complete the cart in two months from a new base when Terry Rickards at Burnham Waste allowed the cart to be built on his land in Highbridge.

Decorated with more than 5,000 light bulbs, the 80ft-long cart cost the club more than £10,000 to build.
