Highbridge pupils call on Theresa May to introduce new fire safety laws

-

A class of Year 9 students at Highbridge’s King Alfred School has written letters to Prime Minister Theresa May calling for tighter laws on fire safety in communal buildings.

Over the last fortnight of term, a class of Year 9 students have spent several of their English lessons exploring the information surrounding the Grenfell Tower fire.

The class read and then analysed several newspaper articles which depicted the horrific scenes in London – this was in preparation for their end of Year 11 English Language exam where they were asked to read and analyse a non-fiction text.

The students then completed an activity where they wrote a letter to the Prime Minister explaining what they had learnt and what they wanted her to do in order to stop this from happening again.

The group’s English teacher, Miss Booth, then posted the letters to the House of Commons where she, and the students, are hoping that they will be read by the Prime Minister herself.

Miss Booth said: “This activity really inspired the students. It gave them an opportunity for their thoughts on a national crisis to be heard by someone influential enough to actually make a change. It has given a real purpose to their writing.”

One student, Connor Lefrere, wrote, “I want you to make sure that this never happens again. Check every building! Check them! Check them now!”

Another student, Josh Reynolds-Hailing, wrote: “Grenfell Tower is a monstrosity. That is why I am writing to you today. It was shocking, outrageous and awful.”
