A new ‘Living Art Sculpture’ is set to be formally unveiled at Highbridge’s Apex Park later this month.
The Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Cllr Mike Cresswell, will be opening the contemporary art on Wednesday 23rd August at 10.30am.
“Designed and constructed by University Centre Weston’s Contemporary Art and Professional Studies Degree students, the structure is made of approximately five hundred bricks which have been hand sculpted and fired at Weston College,” the council’s Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Alongside the living elements, the key inspiration for the sculpture has been drawn from old brick kilns around the area.”
“It will provide a habitat and haven for wildlife and will encourage insects such as lacewings and beetles to make their home within the structure.”
“Over time, mosses and lichens will make themselves at home in all the nooks and crannies, not only on the base, but all over the sculpture.”
The sculpture was assembled by the Weston College’s Technology Engineering and Construction faculty and other bricks were donated by Ibstock Bricks of Almondsbury.
The project was a partnership between Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group and Sedgemoor District Council and the University Centre Weston.
On the same day, Apex Park’s Outdoor Gym will also be officially opened.
Sedgemoor District Council has teamed up with Sutcliffe Play to ‘officially’ open the equipment and a qualified gym instructor will be on hand to show people the correct and best way to use the equipment, so they can get fit in the fresh air.
“Now is the time to come along and try out the new outdoor gym equipment at Apex Park in Highbridge,” added Claire Faun.
“The instructor will be there on Wednesday, 23rd August between 10am and 12 noon.”
“Come along to try out the equipment and Sutcliffe will be providing goodie bags and Balloonitude will be providing balloon modelling for the little ones.”
