Residents and businesses in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been warned to be on the look out for fake bank notes circulating in the town.
It comes after shoppers attempted to use counterfeit £50 notes at town centre businesses to make large purchases on Thursday (December 4th).
An eagle-eyed staff member spotted the notes were fake and want to pass on the warning to others to look out for cash with poor quality paper.
“With the Christmas shopping season now underway, there’s a risk that many shops will be so busy that they will unwittingly take the £50 notes and only later realise they have accepted a counterfeit,” he said.
£50 banknotes carrying the portrait of the first governor of the Bank of England Sir John Houblon were withdrawn from circulation earlier this year. The only £50 note that now holds legal tender status is that displaying entrepreneur Matthew Boulton and engineer James Watt.
