Girl, 16, makes full recovery after being thrown from horse at Brean

-

A teenager who suffered concussion after being thrown from a horse on Brean beach at the weekend has recovered and returned to work the following day.

The 16 year-old girl had been riding along the beach on Saturday when her horse was spooked by a dog, throwing her onto the hard sand.

Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea were called to the scene and the girl was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A family member told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Fortunately, she’s made a full recovery and was back at work the following day, Sunday. We were all worried about her but she’s bounced back.”

A Burnham Coastguard spokesperson said: “Whilst riding her horse on Brean Beach along the sand just below the high tide line, the young rider was thrown from the horse that had been spooked by a dog.”

“Becoming frightened it had panicked and unseated the rider depositing her quite hard onto the floor.”

“The RNLI lifeguards on the nearby beach hadn’t long come on shift and were quick to respond. After assessing her injuries they placed her onto a spinal board and head immobiliser to keep her as still as possible and requested an ambulance.”

“Due to her location and the incoming tide they had to move her further up the beach. We were tasked to assist the Lifeguards with moving her once the ambulance arrived.”

“When we arrived on scene, we noticed a fair wind was blowing in off the sea so using the truck and stretchers we created a giant windbreak to shield the rider and ensured she stayed warm, the RNLI Lifeguards and Coastguard team members took turns in stabilising the head.”

“Once the ambulance arrived and had assessed her we carried her to the Ambulance which was situated in a Car Park off of the beach and she was transferred to hospital, where we hope she makes a full recovery and is back riding again soon.”

“The dog owner was very upset that this incident had happened and came and spoke to the rider as she was boarding the ambulance to apologise.”
