Deal reached on Jubilee bunting in Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street

-

Jubilee bunting will be hung along Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street after all following a meeting of Somerset County Council bosses and the town’s Chamber of Trade on Friday.

Concerns about the health and safety of pedestrians walking along Burnham High Street had led to reports that the town would not be able to hang bunting from lamp posts.

But an agreement has now been reached with the County Council for the Chamber of Trade to install bunting on certain parts of the lighting columns, providing that height restrictions are met, above pavements.

Somerset County Council spokeswoman Anna Newman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are pleased to support Burnham-On-Sea celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. An engineer has met the Chamber of Trade and agreed that bunting can be fixed to the lampposts in the High Street they have chosen.”

“We are happy for bunting to go up across the county for any occasion, but organisers should always contact Somerset Highways first if they want to attach it to our property.”

The council added there had been no formal approach from Burnham Chamber of Trade regarding the bunting.

A spokesman from Burnham Chamber of Trade told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Common sense has prevailed and we’re delighted that this all has been fully resolved.”

Secretary of the Chamber, Jonathan Walter, added: “I’m really glad the bunting can go up and we can go on preparing for our celebrations – the bunting will be put up next weekend in time for the Jubilee.”
