Burnham-On-Sea BMX rider Liam Phillips’ Olympic hopes hang in the balance after he broke his collarbone at the BMX World Championships in Birmingham on Saturday (May 26th).
Liam was rushed to hospital after tumbling over his handlebars and the extent of his injuries later became clear.
Liam posted on Twitter: “Crashed pretty hard in Moto 1 and have broken my collarbone.”
Broken collarbones can take up to 12 weeks to heal, while the Olympic BMX event starts on 8th August.
British Cycling BMX coach Grant White later confirmed Phillips suffered a broken collarbone.
He said: “It was a massive impact. He was in a lot of pain and there was quite a bit of swelling. We’ve just got to keep our fingers crossed at the moment.”
The accident came after a positive start at the BMX Championships for Liam, who claimed a silver medal in the time-trial in Friday’s opening day of elite competition.
