Burnham-On-Sea’s Town Centre Neighbourhood Planning Topic Group met on Thursday night (December 11th) to firm up the boundaries of the area and discuss ideas for a future vision.
A lively discussion took place and lots of ideas were considered, including part-pedestrianisation of the High Street, the need for new indoor tourist attractions in Burnham, and better parking in the town centre.
At the end of the session, Chairman Phil Harvey was tasked with pulling the ideas together into a draft vision statement for the next meeting in January.
Phil told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “As one key theme that emerged was the need to improve the links between the High Street and the Esplanade, we decided to expand the Town Centre area initially considered to include the Esplanade.”
“Our discussion on the vision was usefully informed by consideration of previous regeneration proposals, suggestions from residents and the work of a group of King Alfred students who produced a display for us.”
“Key themes were the need to maintain the human scale of the town centre and its heritage character without holding back appropriate development of the offer to both residents and visitors.”
The next stage in the process is a survey to every household which should come through doors in early January.
Phil added: “There is a freepost address on the survey so all people will need to return it is an envelope. It will also be available electronically for those who prefer to fill it in this way. Hopefully it will generate lots of feedback.”
