Controversial gambling arcade in Highbridge closes down

-

A controversial gambling arcade in Highbridge town centre has closed down after failing to attract enough customers.

Casino Slots opened in Market Street last autumn, after plans to convert the former tattoo shop into a gaming arcade were approved last June despite strong opposition from some local residents who feared the business could increase anti-social behaviour.

Owner Mike Childs told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Unfortunately our footfall tailed off considerably and we are unable to cover our overheads any more. We made our decision to close after eight weeks of poor trading.”

“It is a shame but we were up against strong competition from Burnham and Bridgwater. We are now concentrating on other premises in a busier area. We thank all our customers and hope to see them at our new venture.”

Highbridge district councillor Joe Leach, who was one of several residents opposed to the arcade, said: “This was a controversial opening in the first place – perhaps a proper shop will open now?”
