Hovercraft in poignant sea ceremony for former Mayor and Mayoress

-

A former Mayor and Mayoress of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge had their final wish granted when their ashes were scattered at sea on Saturday evening (September 2nd).

The late Neville Jones OBE passed away last year after being a well-known local councillor and supporter of many groups in Burnham and Highbridge, including BARB Search & Rescue where he was President for 24 years.

In his will, he requested that his ashes and those of his late wife, Margot Jones, be scattered at sea by the rescue hovercraft charity.

A group of 30 relatives, dignitaries and close friends of the couple gathered outside the BARB station on Saturday evening where Reverend Graham Witts, from St Andrew’s Church, led a short ceremony with readings.

The couple’s ashes were then taken by Rev Witts to BARB’s Spirit of Lelaina II hovercraft before being flown out into Bridgwater Bay on the outgoing tide.

Friends and relatives watched from The Esplanade and onboard a fishing boat as the ashes were scattered into the water alongside flowers.

“It was a perfect, moving send-off that fully honoured Neville and Margot’s wishes and we are very grateful to BARB for all their help,” said John Owens, one of Margot’s nephews, who attended alongside nephew Phillip Owens and great nephew Simon Owens. “It was just what Neville and Margot wanted, as well as all the family.”
