It was another evening of high drama on Brean beach on Saturday (August 8th) when a family of three was rescued twice in ten minutes after being rescued by a lifeboat crew after getting stuck on rocks by the incoming tide – then requiring a beach warden to pull their van free from the soft sand, as pictured here.
Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea were called to Brean Down at 8pm after two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, and their father got trapped on the bottom of the southern end of the rocky outcrop.
“They had walked out along the base of the Down from Brean beach and got cut off by the incoming tide,” Burnham Coastguard Stuart Browning told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Realising they were cut off, they did the right thing in contacting the Coastguard. Two lifeboats from Weston-super-Mare were called to take them off and sail them back to Brean beach. An ambulance was also called to check them over.”
But the drama did not end there because the father had left his brand new Ford Transit van on the beach – with a fast-incoming tide lapping around its wheels.
Beach warden Dave Furber told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The man phoned his wife back on the beach and asked her to smash one of the van’s windows so the hand brake could be let off.”
“I then quickly attached a rope to the back of the van and pulled it up the beach to safety. The family was very grateful!”
